A report by BMI Sport Info on the popularity of franchise cricket brands in South Africa reveals that there are 9.5-million domestic cricket supporters in the country, out of a population of 50-million. The most popular franchise, bizarrely, is the Highveld Lions, with 1.8-million supporters. They can barely attract five pissed okes and their braai at the Wanderers, so the rest must be couchies. They haven't won any silverware since the Standard Bank Pro20 series in 2006/7, so precisely why anyone has been supporting them is not immediately clear. At least they are in the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 and the Pro20 final this year, so maybe the ouboets will turn out in bigger numbers. Here are the official numbers by franchise:
Interesting also that the Titans have the least number of supporters, despite being consistently one of the best sides in all forms of cricket. I'm willing to bet the Blue Bulls are significantly better supported. Pretoria is serious rugby territory. Full Article: bizhub Highveld Lions Most Popular Franchise Cricket Brand |
