The Highveld Lions won the first leg of their best-of-three Standard Bank Pro20 semifinal against the Titans in Johannesburg this evening off the last ball of the match, as Robbie Frylinck heaved David Wiese over the boundary for six.

Four runs were required off the final ball to win - Frylinck went two better, which means the Lions now have one paw firmly on the ultimate prize: a place in the 2010 Champions League Twenty20.

As much as the players and franchise would love to win the SB Pro20, they don't have to - all they need to do is get into the final to be assured of their place in the CLT20.

And we all know why the Champions League is important - if not, read Why the CLT20 is a stepping stone to riches.

It's something of a rags-to-riches story for the Lions - early in the season they appeared to be dead and buried, but have clawed their way steadily up and are now in the pound seat.

The second leg of their semifinal is on 5 March, by when the international players will be back from their tour of India. Unfortunately for the Lions, the only international player they can call on is their new captain, Alviro Petersen.

The Titans, on the other hand, can look forward to the return of AB de Villiers, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Roelof van der Merwe, to go with the recently-returned Paul Harris who took 2/24 in this match. That's some serious strike power.

The Titans will also be playing at home, where they really don't like losing. I reckon the Lions need to enjoy the victory while it lasts - I think we're going to use all three games in this semifinal.

That being said, the pressure is on the Titans now. Fame and fortune is at stake in Round 2.

Along with Kallis, who was plugging away manfully at the other end, it was a Last Great Stand of sorts - as soon as one of them got out England was into the tail and on the downhill run to tea and medals.
