Morgan saves England from rampant Bangladesh Print E-mail

Eoin Morgan rescued England from a disastrous situation in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur today, becoming the first player ever to score ODI centuries for two different countries.

His 110* off 104 balls staved off a ravening Bangladesh pack of spinners, who wrecked England's lower order to all but win the match.

It should have, could have, would have been their first ever victory against England in any form of cricket, but Morgan made sure that didn't happen with one of his finest knocks ever.

The Bangladeshis posted a convincing if unspectacular 260/6 in their 50 overs. A few years ago that would have been a hugely challenging score - these days it's not much to write home about, on any track. Average, I'd say.

Considering the hitters in the England side you'd have thought it would be a doddle, but batsman after batsman got out playing cross-batted shots to the slow bowlers.

Requiring nothing more than a run-a-ball with seven overs to go and five wickets down, Luke Wright started the rot by trying to heave Shakib Al Hasan our of the stadium. He missed, I hit and Wright was on his way, much to the disgust of Mike Atherton and Friends.

Tim Bresnan pulled out a fancy swipe and missed and was emulated almost immediately by Graeme Swann. James Tredwell - on debut - had to come in with eight wickets down and a spiralling run rate, and with the crowd baying and the Bangladesh players keyed to the max he seemed like a goner before he arrived.

He managed two singles - both to give Morgan the strike - and watched as the Dublin Bludgeon reach his century before smacking Shafiul Islam out of the park to win it with seven balls remaining.

The disappointment from the crowd was so hostile they couldn't even bring themselves to applaud Morgan's century - the only applause came from his team mates, his Mum and one old geezer with mental health issues.

Heavy disappointment for Bangladesh, who now have to shoulder responsibility for Mike Atherton's dickey heart. At least they set one record I know of: the best bowling figures by any Bangladeshi bowler in an ODI against England, with Shakib's 3/32 in 10 overs.

Ultimately it was classic olde England, really. I thought they were beyond such nonsense by now.
