ZIM puts WIN in a spin Print E-mail

Zimbabwe pulled off an extraordinary victory in the only T20 International against West Indies at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain tonight in one of the more unusual cricket games I've ever seen.

I thought it couldn't get much better than the T20 between New Zealand and Australia earlier in the day, especially not a game between West Indies and Zimbabwe, but I was more wrong than a man who believes 1+1 = 73.

Having been 0/3 after three overs and 11/4, Zimbabwe recovered to post a hopelessly inadequate 105 all out.

Darren Sammy returned the third-best bowling figures in T20 Internationals with 5/26 but was outshone by Sulieman Benn, who took 4/6 - the fourth-best bowling figures in T20s, after Sammy.

I've never seen a situation more hopeless, but despite it all Zimbabwe incredibly thrashed the Windies by 26 runs. It almost beggars belief.

The key for Zimbabwe was spin, on a deck which offered plenty of turn. Graeme Cremer won Man of the Match for his 3/11 in 4 overs, but all the other spinners cashed in with wickets and the Windies had no answer for it.

The West Indies side was missing Chris Gayle but contained big names in Shiv Chanderpaul, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Benn and Kemar Roach. They were clueless. Against Zimbabwe. Who, no offence neighbour, are not exactly the world champions.

All I can say is bring on South Africa's tour of the West Indies. Good times ahead.

The cameras cut to the sight of AB de Villiers and others pointing at Gray and killing themselves laughing, presumably at the sight of his blue-ish boots. He struck a finely comedic figure in his shabby outfit.
