Aussie quick Shaun Tait bowled the fastest ball ever recorded in Australia in the T20 International against Pakistan in Melbourne today: a blistering 160.7km/h.

Only two bowlers have recorded quicker speeds than that: Shoaib Akhtar hit 161.3km/h and Brett Lee 160.9km/h, both in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

Defending a measly 127, Australia ended up winning the game by 2 runs, thanks largely to 3/13 from Tait, who was virtually unplayable.

The first ball he bowled - the first of Pakistan's innings - was 156.3, the second 159.0 and the third ball, which was faced by Imran Farhat, the magical 160.7. He remained above 150km/h for the rest of his four overs.

He was obviously given carte blanche by Michael Clarke to bowl as fast as he could and although he sprayed a couple, by and large he was untouchable.

Sheer, breathtaking pace. Genuine quick bowling.

Dirk Nannes is no slouch either - he too regularly hit the 150km/h mark, as did Mitchell Johnson. I can't remember seeing a bowling attack that quick and I doubt the Pkistan batters had ever seen anything like it either.

The Aussie fielders were well aware of what Tait was trying to do - after each delivery they looked as one up to the scoreboard to check the speed. Back-slaps all round when Tait hit the fearsome 160 mark.

They say there's no substitute for raw pace. I'm a believer.

England came out blazing in the morning session, taking just 19 balls to dismiss the last four South African batsmen with some unplayable, violent bowling from James Anderson and Graham Onions.
