One of the big criticisms of ODI cricket is that games often tend to meander aimlessly, especially when the chasing side has a hopeless total to achieve. Such a situation happened in the third ODI between India and South Africa in Ahmedabad towards the end of the Indian innings, chasing South Africa's massive 365. Robin Jackman posed an interesting question in commentary: shouldn't ODI cricket have the equivalent of a towel to throw in when the cause is lost, rather than playing out the overs with singles to long off? We've all sat through numerous chases that go nowhere, the result being a foregone conclusion, and I've certainly wished a speedy end to such games. You have to be careful of course - Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell took a near-hopeless situation in the first ODI to a one-run defeat with massive, quality hitting down the order. But it needn't be compulsory - more the equivalent of a handshake between captains and a decision to stop wasting everyone's time. If you've got bunnies at the crease, bunnies to come and 200 runs to get in five overs, for example, it doesn't make sense for the batting side to keep going. It's boring. Not a word I often use in relation to cricket. I think it's a pretty good suggestion. I don't imagine it would be used often - most sides fancy their chances of having a full go. But it would be there for hopeless, clearly lost causes. Give 'em a towel to throw in - why not? At the very least a sweaty jockstrap. |
