Cricket South Africa annoucned their squads for the South African tour of the West Indies today, including a shortlisted 18-man squad for the ICC World Twenty20 which includes newcomer Rusty Theron and old-timer Justin Kemp. Directly after the World T20 South Africa plays the West Indies in a one-off T20 followed by a five-match ODI series and a three-Test series. The ODI squads and the Test squad were also announced today. First things first - the World Twenty20 shortlist of 18, which will be whittled down to 15 on 30 March: ICC World Twenty20 Squad (provisional) Graeme Smith (Cape Cobras, captain) Jacques Kallis (Warriors, vice-captain) Loots Bosman (Dolphins) Johan Botha (Warriors) Mark Boucher (Warriors) AB de Villiers (Titans) JP Duminy (Cape Cobras) Herschelle Gibbs (Cape Cobras) Justin Kemp (Cape Cobras) Charl Langeveldt (Cape Cobras) Ryan McLaren (Diamond Eagles) Albie Morkel (Titans) Morne Morkel (Titans) Wayne Parnell (Warriors) Vernon Philander (Cape Cobras) Dale Steyn (Titans) Rusty Theron (Warriors) Roelof van der Merwe (Titans) I would imagine it's a straight race between Kemp and Albie Morkel for the power-hitting allrounder spot, although both could make the cut to give the team options. A big performance from either in the IPL this week could seriously boost their chances. I'm a little baffled at the inclusion of Vernon Philander, but he fulfils a similar role to Morne Morkel - primarily a bowler, with some big hits down the order. I wouldn't take either, frankly - Philander hasn't donned a Proteas cap since 2008 and Morkel can't even get a game in the IPL. I'd far rather sacrifice their hitting for a genuine death bowler like Rusty Theron. Only three names will get cut from that squad, so it's nervous times for a few guys. The three I would cut would be Philander and the Morkel brothers. As for the ODI squad - two players have been dropped from the squad that lost in India recently: Herschelle Gibbs and Albie Morkel. They make way for Graeme Smith (who missed out in India with a finger injury and who is in a race against time to get his IPL injury fixed in time) and Ryan McLaren. Here's the full (and final) squad: ODI Squad for West Indies Tour Graeme Smith (Cape Cobras, captain) Jacques Kallis (Warriors, vice-captain) Hashim Amla (Dolphins) Loots Bosman (Dolphins) Johan Botha (Warriors) Mark Boucher (Warriors) AB de Villiers (Titans) JP Duminy (Cape Cobras) Charl Langeveldt (Cape Cobras) Ryan McLaren (Diamond Eagles) Morne Morkel (Titans) Wayne Parnell (Warriors) Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions) Dale Steyn (Titans) Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Warriors) Roelof van der Merwe (Titans) Ultimately it doesn't matter which of these guys plays - based on the Windies' form against Zimbabwe the ODI series should be a doddle. Mind you - Chris Gayle has always fancied South African bowling, but as we've discovered one man can't win an ODI on his own. Not many surprises there - neither Albie Morkel nor Herschelle Gibbs have impressed in recent times and Ryan McLaren should never have been dropped from the squad in the first place. Finally - the Test squad: Test Squad for West Indies Tour Graeme Smith (Cape Cobras, capt) Jacques Kallis (Warriors, vice-capt) Hashim Amla (Dolphins) Johan Botha (Warriors) Mark Boucher (Warriors) AB de Villiers (Titans) JP Duminy (Cape Cobras) Paul Harris (Titans) Ryan McLaren (Diamond Eagles) Morne Morkel (Titans) Wayne Parnell (Warriors) Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions) Ashwell Prince (Warriors) Dale Steyn (Titans) Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Warriors) The Test squad is unchanged from the squad that did duty in India, drawing the series as they did. Their assignment in the Windies should be significantly easier than it was in India and those are a few good men to face the challenge. No horrors or demons there. Let's hope JP Duminy and Ashwell Prince can get their shit together before then. The following players were named in all three of the above-mentioned squads: Graeme Smith Jacques Kallis Johan Botha Mark Boucher AB de Villiers JP Duminy Ryan McLaren Morne Morkel Wayne Parnell Dale Steyn Tour Fixtures Tags:
